Sarmal Design · Art & Interiors · A practical sizing guide
The right wall art above a sofa starts with proportion. Before choosing a color or texture, measure the furniture, decide how much wall space the composition should occupy, and test the outline in your room.
This guide explains how to choose a wall art size above a sofa, plan a multi-piece arrangement, and compare textile art with sculptural wall decor. The examples feature Sarmal Design pieces, with links to their individual specifications.
The quick answer
Start by testing an artwork or grouping about two-thirds of the sofa’s width. This is a styling guideline, not a requirement. Adjust for nearby windows, lighting, ceiling height and the visual weight of the piece. For a set, use the total installed width—not the dimensions of one component.
1. Measure the sofa before the wall
Measure the sofa from its outer left edge to its outer right edge, including the arms. Then measure the usable wall above it. A wall may be wide, but a window, sconce or doorway can make the available area much smaller.
For a sectional, begin with the seating section directly against the wall you are decorating. A chaise extending into the room does not automatically need to be included in the horizontal measurement. Look at the composition from the doorway and from the opposite seat before deciding where its center belongs.
Next, mark a possible artwork outline with paper or surface-safe painter’s tape. Include the longest tassels, the mounting rod and any parts that extend beyond the main body. Check the footprint in daylight and under your usual evening lighting.
2. Use this sofa-to-art size chart as a starting point
The examples below calculate two-thirds of each sofa width. They are mockup sizes to test, not product recommendations or exact installation instructions.
| Sofa width | Starting art width |
|---|---|
| 180 cm / 71 in | 120 cm / 47 in |
| 210 cm / 83 in | 140 cm / 55 in |
| 240 cm / 94 in | 160 cm / 63 in |
| 270 cm / 106 in | 180 cm / 71 in |
Inches are rounded. The two-thirds starting point is also described in Frameology’s guide to arranging art above a couch.
Do not choose by width alone. A dense, dark relief and a pale, open textile can have the same dimensions but feel different in the room. If your paper template seems balanced, compare the artwork’s silhouette, depth and contrast before ordering.
3. Choose one statement piece or a sculptural set
A single textile wall hanging for a continuous composition
A large textile piece gives the wall a continuous outline while introducing movement through its fibers and suspended elements. It can suit a room where the sofa, rug and lighting already provide several strong shapes.
The Custom Textile Wall Tapestry, 160 × 90 cm is made to order and includes a metal hanging rod. Its listed dimensions provide a reference for planning; confirm the intended width, height and any custom changes before purchase. Wall Tubes for an adjustable arrangement
Separate components allow you to vary the rhythm and overall footprint. With a vertical arrangement, the component lengths determine height, while their widths and the gaps between them determine the installation’s total width. Adding their lengths together does not give the width of the finished composition.
The Tufted Cylinder WallTubes set of five includes three 75 cm pieces, one 50 cm piece and one 25 cm piece. Plan all five together and confirm mounting details for the arrangement you want. Browse all Wall Tubes for other compositions.
A horizontal relief for a clearly defined shape
The Terracotta Sunburst Relief Canvas Wall Art measures 150 cm wide, 70 cm high and 5 cm deep. As a planning example, its width is two-thirds of a 225 cm sofa. The relief’s strong color and defined edge still need to be considered alongside the furniture and wall color. Compare other shapes in the Canvas Wall Art collection.
4. Decide how high to hang art above the sofa
Start with the relationship between the artwork’s lowest point and the sofa back. For framed work, Framebridge suggests a 7–10 inch gap above furniture, approximately 18–25 cm. Treat this as a visual starting point for a mockup, not a universal clearance rule.
Dimensional work and long fringe require a separate check. Sit on the sofa, lean back naturally, and allow room for cushions and movement. The lowest tassel counts as part of the artwork. The height of a fixing point will differ from the visible bottom edge, so use the selected piece’s mounting instructions.
If a tall work only fits by crowding the sofa or ceiling, consider a shallower horizontal composition, a different wall, or a custom size. Moving an oversized piece higher is not always the best solution.
5. Avoid these common sizing mistakes
- Centering on the whole wall automatically. First test alignment with the sofa; nearby doors or furniture may change the visual center.
- Ignoring the gaps in a set. Record the full outer footprint and the planned spacing.
- Using a room photograph as a measuring tool. Camera perspective and unfamiliar furniture sizes make this unreliable.
- Choosing width without checking height. Tall tassels and rods can change how much clear wall you need.
- Assuming every design uses the same mounting method. Confirm weight, wall suitability and fixings for the specific piece.
Before you order: a short measurement checklist
- Record sofa width and usable wall width and height.
- Choose a single piece or mark the outer boundary of the complete set.
- Check width, height, depth, rod length and fringe against the listing.
- Test a full-size paper outline from normal viewing positions.
- Confirm mounting details, customization options and production timing.

Frequently asked questions
What size wall art should go above a 240 cm sofa?
Try a 160 cm-wide paper outline as an initial comparison. Then adjust to the usable wall, the piece’s height and the visual weight of its materials. For several pieces, 160 cm refers to the complete grouping, including gaps.
Can I use several small pieces instead of one large artwork?
Yes. Arrange them as a deliberate group with a planned outer shape. Consistent relationships between the pieces matter more than making every gap identical, especially with irregular sculptural forms.
Can fiber art work in a modern living room?
Look for a silhouette and palette that relate to the room. Repeated forms, restrained colors or a strong horizontal outline offer different ways to combine textile texture with modern furniture.
Can I request a custom size?
Selected Sarmal Design pieces can be discussed in custom dimensions or colors. Send the space measurements and the product you are considering so feasibility and specifications can be confirmed.
